WHY SKI HERE?

Sun Valley is routinely ranked as one of the best ski resorts in the United States, which makes sense given its origins. The historic resort – responsible for the world’s first chairlift – was developed in 1936, after the chairman of the Union Pacific Railroad tasked an Austrian skier with finding the ideal site for a destination resort out West. The goal was to encourage more rail travel, but the result had ripple effects that revolutionized North American skiing.

“One of the inescapable encumbrances of leading an interesting life is that there have to be moments when you almost lose it.”

- Jimmy Buffett

Given that Ketchum beat out Mount Rainier, Yosemite, and Jackson Hole as the chosen site for Sun Valley, you can be sure the surrounding area is magical. Between its history, abundant sunshine, friendly locals, line-free lifts, and panoramic mountain vistas, it’s a resort to visit at least once in a lifetime.
