Why Go?

What to Expect

Despite its media portrayal as a vast, conflict-ridden desert, Iraq has a lot to offer skiers, including terrain that rivals the French Alps in its beauty. Fortunately, the best skiing is in the Zagros Mountains in Kurdistan, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘Other Iraq’ thanks to it being a safe and liberal haven within the country.

"The child is in me still and sometimes not so still."

-Fred Rogers

That’s not to say a trip to Iraq should be taken lightly, especially if you plan to venture into the backcountry, where you’ll face the risk of unexploded landmines near the Iraq-Iran border, in addition to avalanche risks. But if you plan carefully and consult with local experts, hidden gems like Korek Mountain and Mount Halgurd should be accessible to you. For a truly unique experience, go with Untamed Borders to participate in the Iraq Ski Rally and Choman Winter Festival. You can then continue with them into Iran for more Middle Eastern ski adventures.
