WHY CLIMB IT?

The Dolomites are filled with bucket list-worthy climbing routes and Tre Cime di Lavaredo (9,836 ft) is home to some of the most iconic. Composed of three freestanding limestone towers – Cima Ovest, Cima Grande, Cima Piccola – Tre Cime’s views are unparalleled, so much so that its hardest routes are named Panorama and Bellavista. Although the rock quality can be poor in areas, more popular routes tend to stay clean, thanks to heavy traffic. But they can also be overly crowded in summer months, when there’s good weather.

“The Dolomites is home to some of the most formidable climbing in the world and plays host to a vast array of climbing styles.”

- Jonathan Doyle

Arguably the most famous climb in the Dolomites is Via Comici – Dimai (1,475 ft, Grade 6b+) on Cima Grande. Hasse Brandler (1,800 ft, Grade 7a+) is another popular route on this peak that is slightly longer and more difficult. On Cima Ovest – where you can find the insanely difficult Panorama (Grade 8c) and Bellavista (Grade 8b+) routes – popular climbs include Via Cassin (1,500 ft, Grade 7a) and Spigolo Scoiattoli (1,500 ft, Grade 7a). Finally, on Cima Piccola, the most famous route is Spigolo Giallo (a.k.a., Gelbe Kante) (1,150 ft, Grade 6a+), which gets particularly crowded in peak season. With so many incredible choices, you’ll need a whole season to explore them all.
