About the Route

WHY TREK IT?

The trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake takes around 3 days, but you may wish it was longer by the end of it. The route passes through farmland, the rolling Shan Hills, jungles, and plenty of quaint villages, though most hikers remember the smiling school children and farmers even more than the idyllic scenery. You may even get the chance to experience Burmese hospitality up close on a homestay.

“Unlike much of Southeast Asia, this country is still relatively new to the world of tourism, and you can feel it.”

- Kate Diederichs

Kalaw is conveniently located a 6-hour bus ride away from Bagan. So if you’re exploring Myanmar on a budget, you can head there straight after exploring Bagan’s temples. If you’re more concerned with time, you can fly into Heho and take a taxi from there. There are tour guides that will walk with you or else just transport your bags to Inle Lake if you want to walk unencumbered. However you do it, be sure to leave some time for recovery in Inle Lake after. It’s a magical region that will give you a true taste of Myanmar’s tranquility, while also showing signs of how it might change with more tourism and development.
