About the Race

WHY RUN IT?

When you can take one rest stop at a cute patisserie and another at a chateau in Bordeaux, you know it’s a good race. Add costumes and endless glasses on wine into the mix, and you have the famously epic party of the Marathon du Medoc. This is one of few marathons in the world where you’ll need to pace your drinking as much as your running. There are at least 23 places to sample fine French wines on the course, but you’re unlikely to reach the finish line within the 6.5-hour cut-off (if at all) if you indulge in all of them.

“Wine brings to light the hidden secrets of the soul.”

- Horace

If you want to do any real wine tasting in Bordeaux, it’s probably best to go before the race. Chances are you’ll be swearing off drinking for a month after it. But if you’re looking for some more diverse activities to pass the time in France, check out the Pyrenees or the cute coastal towns of Biarritz and Bayonne, all relatively nearby the race.
