About the Mountain

WHY CLIMB IT?

If ever there was a mountain to climb solely for its beauty, Ama Dablam (22,501 ft) would be it. But this iconic Himalayan peak has much more to offer than its views. The route passes through remote villages, like Namche Bazaar, Khunde, Deboche, and Pangboche, giving you a taste of Sherpa culture. Once on the mountain’s upper slopes, you’ll enjoy technical terrain that will test your mountaineering skills and leave you with the sense of being on a great adventure. The ascent up Ama Dablam strikes the perfect balance between risk, effort, and reward. It will undoubtedly take your climbing to the next level while exposing you to some of the best views the Himalayas have to offer.

“Camp 2 is the strangest campsite I've ever seen. It is balanced precariously on a small rock pinnacle of about 10 square meters suspended thousands of meters above the ground.”

- Calum Mallory

Climbers should have intermediate to advanced mountaineering skills before attempting Ama Dablam. Reaching the summit requires traversing steep rock, snow, and ice, including vertical sections. Those not accustomed to rock climbing as part of an expedition should practice climbing in boots in advance, as it’s far different than climbing in rock shoes. There’s also short sections of ice climbing to contend with. If you have any doubts as to your skill level, you’ll have a chance to test it out first, as most expeditions start with a climb up Kyajo Ri (20,295 ft) for acclimatization. It’s also worth consulting an experienced Himalayan mountain guide to have them recommend a skills development plan. Even if it takes months of preparation, standing on the summit of this magnificent peak will be worth it. You’ll be able to look out to legendary giants like Mount Everest (29,029 ft), Cho Oyu (26,906 ft), and Makalu (27,820 ft), knowing you’re one step closer to knowing what it’s like to scale their steep slopes.
