About the Race

WHY RUN IT?

Racers love the Old Dominion 100 because it’s old school – no lottery (though it does sell out), basic aid stations, 40-year-old sign posts, and a spray-painted start line. Yet it’s every bit as tough as flashy events, like the UTMB and Western States, with 14,000 feet of elevation on a mix of paved road, gravel, and trail. Thanks to its difficulty, it has earned a place in the “Grand Slam of Ultrarunning” – an epic challenge where runners must complete four of the five most prestigious 100-milers in the United States in a single calendar year. Other races in the Grand Slam series include Leadville, Wasatch Front, the Vermont 100, and Western States.

“Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.”

- Marilyn vos Savant

The Old Dominion 100 is run through the countryside in the Massanutten Mountains and Shenandoah River Valley. With the start and finish in Woodstock, along the Appalachian Trail, you’ll have a stellar trail network at your fingertips for any recovery hikes.
