About the Route

WHY TREK IT?

The Slovenian Mountain Trail (SMT) is a popular hiking trail from the alpine village of Maribor to the coastal town of Ankaran. It crosses Slovenia’s most impressive mountain ranges, including the Julian Alps, Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Pohorje Massif, and the Karawanks. It also includes hiking the highest mountain in Slovenia, Mount Triglav (9,400 ft).

“Nothing is more beautiful than the loveliness of the woods before sunrise.”

- George Washington Carver

The full SMT takes around 30 days of hiking to complete, but you can also split it into chunks since there are various easy access points. The scenery along the route ranges from green and forested to grey and snowy, depending on where you are relative to the treeline. No matter where you are along the route, however, there’s likely to be a rustic mountain hut nearby where you can take shelter. So there’s no need to haul a tent along with you. You can even get steep discounts on the hut rates by joining the Alpine Association of Slovenia (AAS).
