WHY SKI HERE?

If you’re looking for a place to ski in East Asia, Japan should be far at the top of your list. But if you’ve skied Niseko and Hakuba more time than you can count, or just want to try something offbeat, South Korea is an intriguing alternative. As it was home to the 2018 Winter Olympics – based mostly in Yongpyong and neighboring Alpensia – you can be assured the slopes are up to standard.

“Adventures are only interesting once you've lived to see the end of them. Before that, they are nothing but fear, and being too cold or too hot or too wet or too hungry, and getting hurt.”

- Holly Lisle

Yongpyong is the largest ski resort in South Korea, so it’s a good place to be based for most of your trip. But you’ll want to venture out a little to make the most of your time in the ‘land of the morning calm,’ especially if you’re equipped for a backcountry adventure. There aren’t too many off-piste options in South Korea, but you can find the best of them on Ulleung Island and Mt. Halla on Jeju Islan. The Taebaeksan Snow Festival is also worth checking out (Jan-Feb).
