About the Race

WHY RUN IT?

The Surf Coast Century is like the Pleasantville of ultrarunning. It’s almost too perfect! Between the hard packed sand that’s just right for running, the constantly diverse scenery, and stunning shoreline views, it’s got everything you could ask for in a race. It’s even got just the right amount of challenge with +/-6,000 feet of elevation and rolling hills almost the whole way.

“In ultrarunning, the pain is inevitable, but the suffering is optional.”

- Al Bogenhuber

If you have some time to spend in Australia post-race, there’s adventures to be had in almost every direction! Likely the best option is to do a one-way rental from Melbourne to Adelaide and drive the Great Ocean Road, since the race is directly en route. You may also want to venture into the Outback, which is one of the world’s most remote wilderness areas, especially if you dream of seeing the famous red rock of Uluru. Those who enjoy adventure sports can easily find white water rafting, abseiling, bungee jumping, skydiving, and zip-lining all over the country. Just like neighboring New Zealand, Australia is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Of course, one of the classic ‘bucket list’ adventures in Australia remains scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef. But it’s worth checking out other dive sites in Australia, as these will be less overcrowded and more vibrant, since they haven’t been exposed to as much damaging activity.
