About the Race

WHY RUN IT?

Every June, the oldest 100-miler in the country is held in the Sierra Nevada – Western States. For more than 4 decades, ‘racers, runners, and survivors’ have been making their way from Olympic Valley to Auburn over epic terrain (+18,000 ft / -23,000 ft). The course is so tough it has earned a place in the ‘Western Slam’ – a collection of the four most challenging 100-milers in the Western US But if you want to run it, get in line! There’s a lottery held each December with thousands of running vying for just over 300 spots.

“There's no tangible reward in anything I do, certainly not in running Western States.”

- Tim Twietmeyer

What better way to rest up after a tough race than heading back to Tahoe for a dip in its icy blue waters? Kings Beach, Incline Village, Tahoe City, and South Lake Tahoe are all great areas to kick back and enjoy and enjoy the mountain air.
